Etsy listing SEO: the 13-tag strategy that actually works

Most sellers waste their 13 Etsy tags on duplicates and broad terms. Here is a structured approach to tag selection that maximises discoverability.

Etsy gives you 13 tags per listing. Most sellers use 6–8. That is leaving discoverability on the table.

The 3-layer tag strategy

Layer 1 — Exact match (3 tags): Your most important keyword phrase, split into buyer-intent variations. If your product is "funny cat mug", use: "funny cat mug", "cat lover gift", "cat coffee mug".

Layer 2 — Audience tags (4 tags): Who buys this? "cat mom gift", "gift for cat lover", "cat owner gift", "crazy cat lady gift".

Layer 3 — Occasion tags (3 tags): When do they buy? "birthday gift for her", "Christmas gift idea", "Mother's Day cat gift".

Layer 4 — Style/format tags (3 tags): What kind of product specifically? "ceramic cat mug", "11oz coffee mug", "microwave safe mug".

The 20-character rule

Every Etsy tag must be 20 characters or fewer. This is a hard limit. Tags over 20 characters are silently truncated — which can break your targeting.
