Copyright safety for POD: a practical checklist

Trademark infringement is the fastest way to lose your shop. This checklist covers the most common risk areas and how to stay safe.

Copyright and policy risk for POD sellers

Every day, sellers lose their Etsy or Merch by Amazon accounts because of copyright violations. Most violations are avoidable with a simple pre-publish check.

The high-risk categories

Sports teams and leagues: All major league team names, logos and colour schemes are trademarked. Even "inspired by" language does not protect you.

Characters and franchises: Disney, Marvel, Nintendo, anime characters — all protected. Fan art for commercial sale is still infringement.

Brand names in titles/tags: Adding "inspired by [brand]" or "[brand] style" still uses the trademark and creates risk.

Music lyrics: Song lyrics are copyrighted. Even short phrases from popular songs.

Lower-risk approaches

  • Generic concepts: "plant mom", "dog lover", "hiking enthusiast"
  • Original characters and illustrations
  • Public domain art (verify the specific edition/version is actually in public domain)
  • Abstract patterns and geometric designs
